Our Story

The cast and crew of WRP's first production, Our Town, in 1980.

In 1980, Steve Weiss and Jenny Berg moved to our area interested in becoming involved with a local theater group. Not finding any, they decided to start their own troupe and christened it The Winding River Players. Another person, Dotti Costello, came to town and this threesome produced some astounding productions using the Ulster Rec Hall as its performance space. Who can forget Our Town, with Clyde Bresee?

Numerous plays were performed by thespians from the Valley, Towanda, and Wyalusing areas. Audiences came from all around and WRP survived its infancy with flying colors.

After time, as people headed off in new directions, a mere handful of actors put together the theater part of dinner-theater as a benefit for the Barclay school. These events took place in a myriad of venues: the Elks Club, Towanda Country Club and Sons of Italy. A portable stage was created to perform what was often a Neil Simon comedy. Julie Larnard and John Thomas routinely were the leads, keeping the school and WRP going with finances.

Later, Joe Newbury joined Julie Larnard (she became Julie Larnard-Newbury) and their presence with the group gave it much needed depth and knowledge. Both gave WRP very strong performances as well as leadership in keeping the group moving ahead. Julie was the Artistic Director for many years.

There were other monumental performances like Greater Tuna, with Bill Chamberlain and John Thomas. Those fortunate enough to see that show, many years ago, probably still have not forgotten it. The Players also performed a “trial” in the Bradford County Courthouse, directed by Mike Arcesi.

Prior to renting space in what was Schultz's Auction House in East Towanda, WRP stored their flats, sets and costumes in a variety of basements, garages, closets and other interesting spaces.

In 2001 a storefront on Main Street in Towanda became available. The Black Box Theatre was born, providing the players with a performance space, dressing rooms and storage in the three-story building. It was renamed the Joe Newbury Theatre in 2021 to honor the man who spent a great deal of his time and talent performing and working with the group. A board of directors was established and currently includes people from Bradford and Sullivan counties.

A number of WRP members have gone on to pursue careers in professional theater. Their amazing talent is a joy to behold!

And now, the WRP board is actively engaged in putting together its next season. In spite of covid and a few other deterrents along the way, WRP holds true to the adage “the show must go on!”
